We Build Software That Ships
Background
James Burgess founded Cloud Intelligence in 2020 in Cape Town. Before that, he spent a decade building systems for startups and enterprises across finance, healthcare, and logistics. The pattern was always the same: teams hired agencies that overpromised, underdelivered, and vanished after launch. The code was brittle. The architecture was an afterthought. Maintenance was someone else's problem.
He started Cloud Intelligence to be the opposite. A small team of senior engineers who stay with you. Who build systems they would stake their reputation on. Who answer the phone when things go wrong.
The company grew from a solo practice to a team of 8. We stay small on purpose. Every client works directly with the engineers building their systems. We build enterprise software, data platforms, cloud infrastructure, and AI systems. Our clients range from startups shipping their first product to established companies replacing legacy platforms that outgrew their architecture.
How We Work
Every engagement starts the same way: we listen. We ask about the problem, the constraints, the things you already tried. Then we propose an approach. No slide decks. No padded scopes. A short proposal that names the stack, the deliverables, the timeline, and the price.
Once we start, you hear from us daily. Not weekly status reports nobody reads. Direct messages from the engineers building your system. Questions when something is unclear. Screenshots when a feature lands. Deployments you can actually test.
Every line of code we write has to do three things: deliver value to the business, handle the load it will face in production, and be correct by design. We skip the ceremonies. We ship working software fast and iterate from real feedback. You get direct access to the engineers building your solution. No account managers. No handoffs. The person who architects your system is the person who writes the code.
When Clients Come to Us
Most clients reach us at a breaking point. Their current system cannot handle the load and the outages are stacking up. They know the data is wrong but cannot trace where the error enters the pipeline. They need something built that does not exist yet and the off-the-shelf options are a compromise too far.
Some come earlier. They have outgrown their MVP and know the prototype will not survive another round of users. Others want a long-term engineering partner they can call when the problems get hard. Someone who understands their domain well enough to spot the solution before the meeting ends.
We work across industries: fintech, healthtech, logistics, retail, SaaS. The stack changes. The standard does not.
What We Do
Our core work falls into six areas. Every engagement touches at least two of them because real problems rarely fit into a single category.
